Welcome to Roots Physical Education
Physical Education classes at Roots are a very non-traditional way to learn physical fitness and how to live a healthy lifestyle. Because we do not have a gym or exercise equipment in the building, most of our activity will be done outside at the farm and other locations. I believe that no one needs a gym pass, a ski pass, or any kind of pass to be healthy and physically fit. A healthy lifestyle is rooted in simple action and concentrated effort. Taking a walk, riding a bike, farm work, gardening, and other outdoor activities are all easy and effective ways to be healthy. Those are the activities we will spend the majority of our time doing in class and those are the activities you can spend the rest of your life doing to stay active and feeling good.
Your assessment in these classes is very basic. You will be graded on your action and energy. Simply put, show up for class and do whatever we are doing that day. 50% of your grade will come from the action of showing up for class (on time) and 50% will come from the effort (doing your best) you display during the activity we are doing that day. Because of this simple structure, I believe these classes provide a great opportunity to find academic success and enjoyment.
Because we spend so much time outside, it is very important that you follow the Roots dress code and dress according to the weather. The only time we won't be outside is if the weather is really bad or if the air quality is at very dangerous levels. Please bring a jacket or coat, and even a beanie and gloves, on colder days. Roots has extra clothing (coats, jackets, shoes, etc...) for anybody who forgets or doesn't have access to them. It is very important to wear shoes that you can easily move around in. Because we will be spending a lot of time on the farm, or going on long walks, proper shoes will make a big difference in your performance and comfort.
I look forward to a great year at Roots and to seeing all of you grow and become healthier, happier human beings.
